Aim:

Expansion and resilience in the Chiltern Hills and beyond

A lone tree with blue sky behind

Project Description

Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs) hold valuable treescapes that must balance preservation with evolving environmental challenges. Future Treescapes in ANOBs is a collaborative knowledge transfer project, that connected research discoveries with practical applications to support the Chilterns’ woodland landscape and beyond.

By exploring the Chilterns as a single landscape case study and collaborating with farmers, NGOs, conservationists and land managers, the team developed an understanding of the impacts of a changing climate, wildlife and the relationships between conservation and agriculture on treescape management.

Using a design thinking approach, we put stakeholders and solutions at the heart of the research through workshops, onsite visits and interactive deliberative sessions. This stakeholder-driven approach ensured the resulting strategies were tailored to local needs and scalable for broader application in other protected landscapes.

What we discovered...

  • We strengthened existing networks and collaborative connections between researchers and stakeholders.
  • A structured online tool kit, created by synthesising of research and stakeholder inputs, provided actionable guidance for treescape management.
  • The work empowered stakeholders with accessible and actionable knowledge to enhance the resilience and protection of treescapes in National Landscapes, benefitting the environment and society.
